Earthship Florida:
Florida's First Earthship
Florida's first Earthship is on its way to completion
on 10 acres of extremely fertile land, located in Myakka, FL, (near Bradenton, an hour S. of Tampa).
The owner who started the Earthship is no longer able to continue building and wants to sell the property.
The property has outdoor showers, an outdoor kitchen, lots of camping area, and room for a booming food forest!
Unconventional methods of funding will be needed to purchase this property.
The Mission:
To use this property to provide hands-on education for students of all ages focused on eco-conscious, sustainable practices and community building.
We are dedicated to intergenerational knowledge and skill exchange and cultivating an atmosphere for experimentation and development of innovative, sustainable technologies.
The Vision:
Along with having weekly classes and workshops, we seek to create a hands-on sustainability museum and to provide the public school system and public in general with much needed sustainability education and field trips.
We envision colleges and universities such as
Eckerd College, USF St. Pete, SPC and New College using the Earthship and this property as a living laboratory to experiment and innovate with sustainability technologies and methods.
We also imagine 4-6 people living in sustainable,
tiny houses managing the property.
Sustainability Education:
The classes and workshops will be focused on various forms of sustainability such as:
permaculture and organic farming
natural and recycled-material building
water and waste management
sustainable energies
communication skill building
community bonding through art and music
Our Involvement:
Along with a few of the key people previously involved in building the Florida Earthship, The Illumi-Nation Project and several other eco-conscious activists and innovators have joined forces to form an organization centered around completing the Earthship and developing the entire property as a sustainability educational and research center!

An Earthship is a type of passive solar house that is made of both natural and recycled materials (such as earth-filled tires).
They are intended to be "off-the-grid ready" homes, with minimal reliance on both public utilities and fossil fuels.
They are constructed to use available natural resources, especially energy from the sun.
They are designed to use thermal mass construction and natural cross ventilation, assisted by thermal draught (Stack effect), to regulate indoor temperature.
Earthships are designed and marketed by Earthship Biotecture a registered trademark of Michael Reynolds, founder of Earthship Biotecture in Taos, New Mexico.
